Introduction The heritage estate is an inheritance of considerable value. It can be viewed broadly as comprising the resources, the experience, and the past understanding on which present and future generations are built. This is a much broader view of heritage than that found in the original Ontario Heritage Act of 1974, legislation which focused on the built environment. More recently, the heritage idea has expanded to include "living" heritage, that is "documents, traditions, and values; skills and stories" (Alder, 1992).
